At Starry Lane we make our sugar cookies in an iconic star shape, with a simple sugar icing. It’s a classic, and we love it. But your sugar cookies can be anything you can dream up. Snow flakes, Christmas trees, tigers, teddy bears, unicorns, there really is no limit to the possibilities.
You’ll love this ultra simple sugar cookie mix, and so will everyone who’s lucky enough to try one. Sharing is caring after all.

Needed Ingredients
Powdered Sugar (C&H brand)
Sugar (C&H brand)
Vanilla Extract
Margarine (Soy Free Earth Balance)
Water
White Rice Flour, Corn Starch, Brown Rice Flour, Baking Powder (corn starch, sodium bicarbonate, sodium aluminum sulfate, monocalcium phosphate), Xanthan Gum
Step 1: Mix Your Cookie Dough
Cream the BaseIn a mixing bowl, combine:
– Powdered sugar (un-sifted)
– Granulated sugar
– Vanilla extract
– Margarine (use the brand we recommend for best results)
Mix on low speed until just combined, then switch to medium speed until the mixture is fully creamed but not fluffy.
Avoid adding too much air—you want smooth, not puffy!
Add the Flour Mix
Pour in the provided flour blend and mix slowly until fully incorporated.
Increase to medium speed and mix for 2 minutes.
The dough will be crumbly—that’s totally normal.
Add Water Slowly
Turn mixer to low speed and slowly drizzle in the measured water.
Keep mixing on low until all the water is absorbed and your dough comes together.
Step 2: Chill the Dough
Choose Your Style:Slice & Bake or Cut-Out Cookies
Slice & Bake Method
– Shape the dough into a log about 8 inches long.
– Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
– Dough will keep in the fridge for 1 week or can be frozen for up to 3 months.
Cut-Out Method
– Place dough between two sheets of parchment paper.
– Roll out gently to ¼ inch thick.
– Transfer (still between the parchment) to a baking sheet.
– Chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
Once chilled, the parchment will peel off easily—promise!
Step 3: Bake Your Cookies
Preheat the OvenRegular oven: 325°F
Convection oven: 310°F
Bake for 12–15 minutes (regular) or 10–12 minutes (convection).
Cookies are done as soon as they’re firm. If you see browning, they’re overbaked.
Bake Slice & Bake Cookies
– Unwrap chilled cookie log.
– Slice into ¼ inch thick rounds using a sharp knife.
– Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving 1 inch between each cookie.
– Bake as directed above.
Bake Cut-Out Cookies
– Remove from fridge.
– Peel back the top parchment, replace it, flip the whole sheet over, and remove the second parchment.
– Cut into your favorite shapes!
– If you re-roll the scraps, chill the dough again before cutting—warm dough doesn’t hold up well.
– Bake as directed above.
Step 4: Shake It Up!
